Conroe is far enough inland to escape storm surge but not the wind, falling pines, flooding and multi-day power outages that hurricanes bring. Hurricane Beryl in 2024 knocked out power to much of the area for days. Use this checklist before every season.
Before the season (do it in May)
- Review your insurance. Know your wind/hail deductible, which is often a percentage of dwelling coverage.
- Buy flood insurance now. Most policies have a 30-day waiting period.
- Trim trees away from the roof and power lines. Tall pines are the biggest risk to Conroe homes.
- Clean gutters and check that downspouts drain away from the foundation.
- Photograph every room and your valuables for insurance records.
- Service your generator or consider a portable power station.
Supply kit
- Water: 1 gallon per person per day for at least 7 days
- Non-perishable food, manual can opener, pet food
- NOAA weather radio, flashlights, extra batteries
- Power bank / portable power station for phones and medical devices
- First-aid kit and a 2-week supply of prescriptions
- Copies of IDs, insurance policies and deeds in a waterproof bag
- Cash (ATMs and card readers go down with the power)
When a storm is 72 hours out
- Fill vehicles and gas cans
- Bring in or tie down patio furniture, trampolines and grills
- Install shutters or plywood if you have them
- Set the fridge and freezer to their coldest settings
- Move cars to higher ground if your street floods
Generator safety
Never run a generator in a garage or near windows. Carbon monoxide deaths spike after every Texas storm. Keep it at least 20 feet from the house.
After the storm
- Stay away from downed lines and report them to Entergy Texas
- Photograph all damage before cleanup, then make temporary repairs to prevent more damage (tarps), and keep receipts
- File your claim quickly
- Watch out for storm chasers. Get local references and never pay in full upfront
